Keeping a PC Healthy in Hot, Humid Weather

Dust, damp and heat all shorten a PC's life. Simple prevention.

Coastal air carries a lot of moisture, and mixed with dust it settles inside the case as a sludge-like film. Fans seize, temperatures climb and components wear out early.

Every three months

  • Open the case and clear the dust with a blower — not a vacuum cleaner, which builds up static.
  • Wash the front and PSU dust filters and refit them completely dry.
  • Spin each fan by hand to check it turns freely; replace any that rattle.

Once a year

Dried-out thermal paste on the CPU sends temperatures up sharply — reapplying it annually is worthwhile, and safest done at a service counter.

Everyday habits

Keep the case off the floor, leave at least 10cm of clearance from the wall, and if the PC sits unused, switch it on at least once a week — before trapped moisture starts corroding the board.
