Where to spend and where to save when buying a student's first PC.
Most students buying a first PC make the same mistake: they pour everything into the processor and skimp on memory and storage. In day-to-day use, speed comes far more from the SSD and RAM.
Spending priorities
- SSD first — a 256GB or 512GB SATA SSD makes Windows and applications visibly faster.
- 8GB of RAM — the practical minimum for many browser tabs, Office and online classes at once.
- Processor — on a tight budget a Ryzen 5 5600G runs the whole PC without a separate graphics card.
- Monitor — a 24-inch IPS panel is easier on the eyes; the small premium over TN pays for itself.
Where you can save
RGB cases, premium coolers and gaming chairs can all come later. Skip them on the first build and put the money into the SSD and RAM instead.
What not to skip
A decent power supply and a UPS. When the mains fluctuates, a cheap PSU can take the motherboard down with it — a repair that costs more than the savings ever did.
